Description
English: A U.S. Marine with the Hawaii-based 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment is greeted by an Iraqi child during a humanitarian mission through Barwana, Iraq a town of 40,000 in Iraq's Al Anbar Province June 15, 2006. Marines who provide security to this region of Iraq say such missions are helping win the trust of locals. As the region's insurgency is quelled, Marines here are focusing on developing and implementing programs that they say will be eventually turned over to future Iraqi Government workers in Barwana after Coalition Forces withdraw from the city. One program Marines are helping Barwana's government implement is a vehicle registration mandate. The program would require all vehicle owners to register their vehicles with the local government. Upon registration, vehicle owners are given an identification card, similar to a U.S. driver's license, and are entered into a registry database.
