English: FORWARD OPERATING BASE HOTEL, Iraq Petty Officer Third Class Henry A. Forcadilla, a Navy corpsman currently deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, displays the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal he was awarded during a ceremony here Jan. 28, 2005. The 25-year-old Pittsburgh, Calif., native received the medal for his heroic service as a platoon corpsman with 2nd Platoon, Company C, Battalion Landing Team 1st Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable), during combat operations in Najaf, Iraq, in August. The following is from Forcadilla's award citation: After an enemy mortar round impacted within the 81 mm mortar platoon position in the cemetery (in Najaf), he left his immediate cover and braved enemy small arms, sniper and continuing mortar fire to rush to the scene at the risk of his own life. Arriving to find a Marine badly wounded, and with an impaired airway, he cleared the airway and cradled the Marine in his lap, placing his body between the Marine and the enemy sniper and mortar fire. While treating the Marine's wounds, he knowingly remained dangerously exposed to hostile enemy fire. By his noteworthy accomplishments, perseverance, and devotion to duty, Hospital Corpsman Third Class Forcadilla reflected credit upon him and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and United States Naval Service. |
