English: James L. Stalnaker, chief of staff (left), U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Pacific, presents Mr. John Drost, (right), safety specialist at MarForPac, with a certificate of appreciation at his retirement ceremony here Sept. 23. Drost is scheduled to officially retire Sept. 27 after 33 years of Department of Defense service. Among his notable accomplishments, he is the first civilian tactical safety specialist who served a Marine Corps infantry regiment. He also played a key role in the development of Corps-wide safety programs, including the Ground Safety for Marines program. In 1974, Drost began his service with a five-year enlistment in the U.S. Navy as a machinist’s mate and continued to serve the armed forces as a civilian thereafter. Having served in the Navy, Drost found working among Marines to be different. “It’s a very hard culture to break into,” he said. “But once you do, it’s something you’ll never forget.” As he closes this chapter in his life, Drost now looks forward to pursuing his passion as a woodworker. “I just want to be out in the country, with a simple life. That’s all I want,” Drost said. |
