English: "I took this photo of the USNS General H. H. Arnold from the deck of the tug YTB-783 as she was approaching Naval Station Adak, Alaska. The photo was taken sometime between February of 1976 and August of 1977 as that was the duration of my assignment on the island. The Arnold came in and out of Adak regularly during that time. The ship only entered the harbor under heavy cloud cover (easy to find on Adak) or most often at night, took on fuel, and always left before daybreak. The captain appeared to be a Navy captain, but the crew appeared to be civilian, judging by their lack of uniforms, haircuts, beards, age, etc. --Brian M. Godfrey" |
