Description USN 680275: Rear Admiral Arleigh A. Burke during his visit to USS Nautilus (SSN 571), the Navy’s 1st atom-powered submarine, prior to his appointment to Chief of Naval Operations. The ship was at Submarine Base, New London, Connecticut. Rear Admiral Arleigh A. Burke, (right), is greeted by Commander Eugene Wilkinson, Commanding Officer of Nautilus as he steps onboard USS Nautilus. Admiral Burke joined the ship as she started the 2nd phase of her 6 week shakedown cruise. Photograph released May 31, 1955. U.S. Navy photograph, now in the collections of the National Archives.
