| Description |
English: The U.S. Navy destroyer USS Bearss (DD-654) circling an iceberg, on 5 September 1958. Bearss was part of Task Force 88 (TF 88). In December 1958, the U.S. Navy's ALL HANDS magazine stated that TF 88 was a special anti-submarine warfare task group with an additional task of obtaining hydrographical data. In reality, TF 88 was part of "Operation Argus", a series of nuclear weapons tests and missile tests secretly conducted during August and September 1958 over the South Atlantic Ocean. |
