DescriptionUSS George F. Elliott (AP-13) burning off Guadalcanal on 8 August 1942 (AWM P05292.022).jpg |
English: A Japanese Mitsubishi G4M bomber aircraft crashed into the Haywood-class troopship, USS George F. Elliott (AP-13). She landed United States Marines and ordinance on 7 August 1942 on Guadalcanal Island, continuing into the following day. On 8 August, as Japanese torpedo planes attacked the convoy of U.S. and Australian ships, George F. Elliott was hit by a crashing enemy bomber and caught ablaze. When the fire became uncontrollable the transport ship was sunk. |
