Description

SASEBO, Japan (March 6, 2013) Lt. Cmdr. Mark A. Rice, commanding officer of the mine countermeasures ship USS Guardian (MCM 5), receives the ship's decommissioning pennant to place inside a time capsule along with the ships ensign, messages and mementos at Commander, Fleet Activities Sasebo. Originally commissioned in 1989, Guardian has been forward deployed to Sasebo since 1996 conducting bi-lateral and multi-lateral mine exercises and theater security cooperation missions throughout the U.S. 7th Fleet area of responsibility.
