Summary edit
DescriptionUSS Hambleton (DD-455) at the Boston Navy Yard in 1943.jpg | The torpedoed U.S. Navy destroyer USS Hambleton (DD-455) at the Boston Navy Yard, Massachusetts (USA). As she lay anchored by USS Winooski (AO-38) off Fedala, Morocco, in the evening of 11 November 1942, Hambleton was struck amidships on the port side by a torpedo fired by the German U-boat U 173. The crippled ship was towed to Casablanca for temporary repairs. U.S. Navy Seabees there cut the ship in two, removed a 12 m section of her damaged hull, then joined the two remaining halves together. Escorted by a tug, Hambleton reached Boston 28 June 1943 for permanent repairs. Note that the destroyer has been cut in two pieces, again. | |||
