Description The commissioning of the U.S. Navy large deck carriers USS Lexington (CV-2) and USS Saratoga (CV-3) in 1927 necessitated the creation of carrier air groups capable of executing torpedo bombing, dive-bombing, fighting, and scouting missions. Among the aircraft assigned to these first carrier air groups and pictured on the deck of Lexington were the Boeing F3B-1 (radial engines, front), Curtiss F6C-3 Hawk, and Martin T4M-1 (aft).
