Description
English: The U.S. Navy destroyer USS Phelps (DD-360) during the third day of the Battle of Midway, on 6 June 1942. Phelps lost suction because fuel oil was running low and caused a huge cloud of smoke to ascend skyward. The light cruiser USS Atlanta (CL-51), left, approached and offered its assistance but the Phelps resumed its position in the battle line shortly afterwards without requiring outside help.
