| Description |
English: The U.S. Navy destroyer USS Samuel B. Roberts (DD-823) underway at sea, 10 October 1962. Samuel B. Roberts had completed her FRAM I-modernization and screened the aircraft carrier USS Essex (CVS-9) which was on her way to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, after an overhaul. Twelve days later, the U.S. president Kennedy announced the naval blockade of Cuba, which Essex enforced for the next four weeks during the "Cuban Missile Crisis". Note the Sikorsky SH-3A Sea King of Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron 9 (HS-9) "Sea Griffins" in the background. |
