Description
English: Kauai, Hawaii (Nov. 21, 2002) -- A developmental Standard Missile-3 (SM-3), designed to intercept short to medium-ranged ballistic missile threats, is launched from the Pearl Harbor-based Aegis cruiser USS Lake Erie (CG 70). The SM-3 missile intercepted its target three and one-half minutes after the targets launch from the Pacific Missile Range Facility, Barking Sands, Kauai, Hawaii. This was the third consecutive successful intercept in the Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) program, part of the multi-layered Ballistic Missile Defense System being developed by the Missile Defense Agency.
