English: Indian Ocean (Apr. 6, 2005) – Dr. Dana Braner, a volunteer with the non-governmental organization “Project HOPE,” assisted by Information Systems Technician 2nd Class Sheronda Allen, carries an Indonesian child in respiratory distress from an MH-60S Seahawk helicopter on the flight deck aboard the Military Sealift Command (MSC) hospital ship USNS Mercy (T-AH 19). The child was medically evacuated to the ship from the island of Nias, Indonesia where Mercy’s medical personnel are conducting humanitarian assistance operations in the wake of the devastating earthquakes that struck the island Mar. 28, 2005. At the request of the government of Indonesia, the Military Sealift Command (MSC) hospital ship USNS Mercy (T-AH 19) and the MSC combat stores ship USNS Niagara Falls (T-AFS 3) are on station off the coast of Nias, providing assistance as determined appropriate and necessary with earthquake disaster relief efforts and provide medical assistance to those in need.
