Summary
editDescriptionUmberslade Hall - geograph.org.uk - 88604.jpg |
English: Umberslade Hall. Umberslade Hall was built in the 18th Century by the Archer family, at a time when this became a fashionable part of the world for many influential families to live. It was subsequently owned by George Frederick Muntz, a Baptist convert and Member of Parliament and although the hall is now mainly apartments several local enterprises are still run by the same family.
This view shows the front of the hall from the point at which 1.5 mile driveway 88609 from Tanworth-in-Arden crosses Umberslade Road. The name of hall was also carried by GWR Hall Class locomotive number 4975 from its construction at Swindon in 1930 until its scrapping at Newport in 1963. Between 1967 and 1972 Umberslade Hall hosted the "Common Research Laboratory" of Triumph and BSA motorbikes. This was with mixed success and the labs earned the various nicknames of Slumberslade Hall, Marmalade Hall and Mecca. The latter was because of their perceived ability to "mecca complete {insert expletive of choice here}-up of anything"! |
