| Description | Even though it is still in the midst of a major renovation, the "Giant Radio" known as Union Terminal is still an impressive sight in Cincinnati's Queensgate neighborhood. Constructed in 1932-33, the massive Art Deco structure is notable for its half-dome rotunda, which gives the building its signature exterior appearance. The last legacy train service left the station in the early 1970s, and it languished for over a decade before being converted into the Cincinnati Museum Center, which has turned the empty landmark into a major destination for people all across the region. Today, the building is being restored, with some building systems unchanged since its construction being replaced or upgraded to modern standards, which will help the building last at least until the turn of the next century. Also, the parking lot in the foreground of this image is part of was formerly known as Lincoln Park, a now-paved over green space that took up two city blocks and served the residents of the West End and Kenyon-Barr neighborhoods from the mid-19th Century onward, long before Union Terminal was constructed. |
