Description
English: Col. Jason Fettig removes his ear protection while walking out of the acoustic testing chamber at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, on May 3, 2023. He directed the United States Marine Band inside the acoustic chamber in an attempt to match the volume levels required to test spacecraft preparing for launch. Goddard invited the U.S. Marine Band to perform inside the acoustics chamber, a room that replicates the harsh sound environment of a rocket launch by blasting sound waves at a spacecraft to make sure it can withstand the journey into orbit. The Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud, and ocean Ecosystem (PACE) spacecraft was put to the test inside this chamber ahead of its launch in 2024. (Credit: NASA Goddard/Katherine Mellos) Alt: The conductor of the US Marine Band walks toward the camera, smiling and removing big black ear protection from his head. He is wearing a military dress uniform, with a navy jacket decorated with gold buttons and epaulets. Behind him, in softer focus, members of the band are walking around in red dress jackets.
