Summary
editDescriptionUnity Temple, Niagara Street, Buffalo, New York - 20211103.jpg |
English: Unity Temple, 1940 Niagara Street, Buffalo, New York, November 2021. Not to be confused with the identically named and much more famous Frank Lloyd Wright structure in suburban Chicago, Buffalo's Unity Temple was built in 1906 and described by Buffalo's Landmark & Preservation Board as the "most striking work of building art" in the Black Rock section of the city. A resolute example of the monumental Neoclassical style heavily favored in the architecture of fraternal halls, the building features a tetrastyle temple front with egg-and-dart motifs in the capitals of the Tuscan Doric columns, a quartet of circular medallions on the frieze flanking the nameplate, and a shallow-pitched pediment punctuated with modillions. Framing the entrance itself are pairs of engaged Ionic columns and Roman-latticed windows. The sphinx on the right side of the front steps is, sadly, the sole remnant of what was once a plethora of Egyptian-styled statuary and ornamentation. Unity Temple was unusual as it served as meeting hall for chapters of a wide array of different fraternal organizations - among those that used it in its earliest days were North Buffalo Lodge No. 517 of the I.O.O.F., Occidental Lodge No. 766 of the F.&A.M., and the Knights of the Maccabee's International Tent No. 18. It remained in use for its original purpose until 1989, and is now the home of Gothic City Antiques. |
