Usnea sp. 20081212 Volcan Quetrupillan, Chile This looks just like a species of Niebla, the so-called sea-fog lichens... except for the small detail that it is as far from the sea as possible, perched high on a misty outcrop of basalt on Volcan Quetrupillan. I called this one the "zebra" due to the striking black stripes. There was another similar slightly-less-spectacular, though more common species that occurred along side it. Anyone have any ideas? Is it a Ramalina? Someone suggested Usnea, however it definitely did not have an axis, and it did have unevenly thickened medulla in cross-section... Update: Curtis continues to suggest Usnea sphacelata, which I must confess is the spitting image of this thing! Clearly need to go back up there and dissect one a little more carefully! :) |
