Description
English: Steilneset Memorial (The Witch Monument or Witch-hunt memorial at Steilneset) is located just off the town of Vardø, by the Barents Sea in the easternmost part of Finnmark, Norway.
  • The monument opened in 2011 in memory of the 91 victims of the witch trials and executions in Finnmark from 1600 to 1692, most of whom were burned at the stake at Steilneset. The memorial is part of the National Tourist Routes and consists of:
    • The "Flame House" featuring the installation The Damned, the Possessed and the Beloved by the French-American artist Louise Bourgeois (1911–2010), which includes a chair with flames in the seat and seven large oval mirrors.
    • A 135-meter-long memorial hall made of sailcloth that houses a dark corridor with simple light bulbs and biographies (memorial plaques) of the victims written by Professor Liv Helene Willumsen; the Glass Pavilion for the artwork and the promenade hall were designed by Swiss architect Peter Zumthor (born 1943).
Distorted panoramic photo taken at the end of July with fog over Vardøya and the strait of Bussesundet towards the mainland in the west. In the background to the right is a chapel and cemetery.

Lenger bak (over personene i bildet) sees no:Vardøhus festning.
