English: Valley mire to the west of Ferny Crofts, New Forest A view across the mire in the valley to the west of Ferny Crofts, from a spur of the dry heath above. The small trees are growing alongside an stream that flows along the axis of the valley from the northeast. The tufts of white in the foreground are common cottongrass (Eriophorum angustifolium), a species of sedge that grows in acidic wetlands such as this mire. Locally it is called "bog cotton", and it gives a clear warning of boggy ground. The clump of oak trees visible on the horizon is Partridge Bush on Furzy Brow. Tracks can be seen rising up the other side of the valley, possibly from a now-abandoned human route, still used by ponies and cattle.
