Scott Catalog Number of Postage Stamp: Postmark and Manuscript Cancellation. Circular date stamp (cancel) includes a conjunctive use of two "V" stamps to indicate a ten cent postage rate (single rate over 300 miles, 1845-1851). Green ink cancel. Collection: Steven R. Shook SENDER: Unknown RECIPIENT: Rev. J. C. Lowrie Mission House No. 23 Centre Street New York. REMARK: The Mission House located at No. 23 Mission Street in New York City. The recipient of this letter was Reverend John Cameron Lowrie, a prominent member of the Presbyterian Church. Lowrie was born on December 16, 1808, at Butler, Butler County, Pennsylvania, the son of Walter W. Lowrie and Amelia (McPherrin) Lowrie. John was educated at Jefferson College of Pennsylvania and at the Allegheny and Princeton Theological Seminaries. In 1833, Lowrie married Louisa Ann Wilson of Wheeling, Ohio County, Virginia (now West Virginia). That same year he and Louisa traveled on a mission to India. Louisa would die in Calcutta, India, and John returned to America due to illness. Lowrie served as the Assistant Secretary on the Presbyterian Board of Foreign Missions from 1838 to 1850. He then served as Secretary of the Presbyterian Board of Foreign Missions from 1850 to 1891. Lowrie married Elizabeth Bayard Boyd in 1838; to this union four children were born. John C. Lowrie died on May 31, 1900, at East Orange, Essex County, New Jersey. He is buried at Rosedale Cemetery in Orange, Essex County, New Jersey. Copyright 2017. Some rights reserved.
