REMARK: This envelope contains an eight page letter dated March 9, 1890, written by Leslie Haviland to his cousin Carrie E. Aiken. The letter contains information and observations of life as a student at Valparaiso University, as well as information related to the family.

Carrie Evelyn Aiken was born in March 1855 in New York and died in 1923; she is interred in Lakeview Cemetery in Jamestown, Chautauqua County, New York. Genealogical information suggests that Carrie never married.

Leslie W. Haviland was born January 20, 1866, in Ellery, Chautauqua County, New York, and died in August 1942, in Chautauqua, Chautauqua County, New York, being interred in the Dewittville Cemetery in Chautauqua. According to obituary records, Leslie was a school teacher and superintendent. He was graduated from Mayville High School, Fredonia Normal School, and Valparaiso University, and taught at Pleasantville and other district schools in Chautauqua County, New York. Later, he went to Illinois where he was superintendent of schools at Lostant, Colfax, Gilman, Watseka, and Onanga before his retirement in 1934.
