REMARK: This postal cover contains a single page letter signed by Henry Baker Brown, who served as president of The Northern Indiana Normal School and Business Institute from 1873-1900, Valparaiso College from 1900-1907, and Valparaiso University from 1907-1917. The letter appears to be in reply to earlier correspondence whereby A. S. Brown had requested some answers to questions asked in a previous letter. Henry Baker Brown apologizes that he has lost the original correspondence, but indicates that he indeed replied and believes that his response was lost in the mail.

Examination of 1880 federal census records for Huntington County, Indiana, strongly suggest that the recipient of this letter, "A. S. Brown," was Albert S. Brown. Albert S. Brown was born on February 13, 1858, in Wayne County, Indiana, and died on February 7, 1914, in Huntington County, Indiana. Albert was the son of Nehemiah and Sarah (Moore) Brown. On October 26, 1881, Albert married Anna M. Sprinkle (b. July 14, 1861, d. June 9, 1938) in Huntington County, Indiana; two children resulted from this union - Herbert Austin Brown (b. April 13, 1884, d. December 13, 1967) and Mary A. Brown (b. April 5, 1897, d. February 1 1995). Genealogical research suggests that Henry Baker Brown and Albert S. Brown were not related to one another.
