SENDER: S. T. COOPER Valparaiso, Ind.

RECIPIENT: Principal of Public School Maple Rapids Clinton Co. Mich.

REMARK: The sender of this mailing is believed to have been Samuel Thrall Cooper. Cooper was a minister at Valparaiso Methodist Episcopal Church, serving as that church's pastor from 1856-1859, and he was instrumental in establishing the Valparaiso Male and Female College. The college, which would go defunct, was situated upon the site of the present day Central Elementary School.

Samuel T. Cooper was born on June 11, 1824, the son of Samuel C. Cooper and Caroline H. (Thrall) Cooper. Though a minister, Cooper was also a successful businessman. He would later move from Valparaiso to St. Joseph, Berrien County, Michigan, where he established Cooper Wells & Company, a knitting and spinning business. Cooper passed away on February 3, 1892; he is buried in the St. Joseph City Cemetery.
