Description View of the SQA-8 variable depth sonar (VDS) aboard the U.S. Navy destroyer USS John W. Thomason (DD-760) after her FRAM conversion, in 1959-60. In March 1959, John W. Thomason entered Long Beach Naval Shipyard, California (USA), as prototype ship for the new Fleet Rehabilitation and Modernization (FRAM) program. During this extensive repair and modernization period she received a flight deck and hangar aft, variable depth sonar, the latest electronic equipment, and many improvements in living and working spaces. The conversion was followed by extensive trials and local training operations. The SQA-8 proved to be too heavy and difficult to handle. Therefore, later FRAM-modernized destroyers received the modified SQA-10.
