Description
English: Veins are mineral-filled fractures in rocks. Common vein-filling minerals include quartz (SiO2) and calcite (CaCO3). The example seen here is in a limestone cave ceiling in western Kentucky's Mammoth Cave, the longest cave on Earth. As of March 2024, 426 miles worth of passages have been explored and mapped.

The vein-filling mineral in this case appears to be gypsum (hydrous calcium sulfate, CaSO4·2H2O).

The host rocks are in the Middle Mississippian Ste. Genevieve Limestone.

Locality: southern stretches of Main Cave, Mammoth Cave, western Kentucky, USA
