ions about theauthenticity of some of them, and the Philipin the Dulwich Gallery is rather more thandoubtful. The Wallace Collection has afew beautiful examples of Velazquez, andafter that there are about fifty private ownersof pictures that cannot be readily seen.Perhaps a considerable proportion of theseworks would, if subjected to very carefulscrutiny, reveal themselves as copies byMazo or others. In France there arehalf-a-dozen fine pictures in the Louvre.Germany can show some in Berlin, Dresden, and Munich; Holland has one or two. Thereare less than a dozen in all Italy. TheHermitage Gallery in St. Petersburg hasfive or six, and Vienna about twice as many; PLATE VIII.—THE PRINCESS MARIA THERESAOF AUSTRIA This daughter of Philip IV. became Queen of France. Thepicture was painted when she was about ten years of age, andconsequently belongs to the last period of Velazquez work. VELAZQUEZ 75 but to see Velazquez one must go to Madrid. The Museo del Prado has over sixty of theartists pictures, and though a small pro-portion of these have scarcely a touch ofthe masters hand, all his greatest work hasfound a resting-place here. Las Lanzas,Las Hilanderas, Las Menifias, Philip IV. onhorseback, Don Balthasar Carlos on hispony, the Crucifixion, the Coronation ofthe Virgin, the Dwarfs, ^sop, Menippus—all these are to be seen in the Prado; thegreater number being in the Salon of Isa-bella, an octagonal room in which one mayspend long hours. The writer, on the occa-sion of his last visit to Madrid, made a noteof the number of visitors to the famousoctagonal room during the four morningshe spent there. In the course of sometwelve hours the room was visited by sometwelve people! It is only fair to say that ^6 VELAZQUEZ it was not in the tourist season; the monthwas June, and nobody stayed in Madridfrom choice. There are pictures by Velazquez to beseen in Madrid outside
