Description Vickers VC10 C1K at the RAF Museum, Cosford, 8 July 2020. One of the most beautiful airliners ever built, in my opinion, it was designed specifically to BOAC's specification to operate from 'hot and high' airports in places such as Africa where the Boing 707 was deemed unsuitable. In the vent, BOAC changed their mind and wanted to buy the 707, which they did but the government forced them to buy the VC10 as well since that was the whole reason for the design! As a result, the VC 10 was a very robust and fast airliner with its powerful engines and achieved the fastes subsonic crossing of the Atlantic. But all at the cost of greater fuel consumption than the 707 or Douglas DC-10. The RAF ordered VC10's for trooping and it was ideal for their needs, being a very tough aircraft. Later some C1's (including the exampe at Cosford) were converted to tanker aircraft (to supplement Handley Page Victor tankers) and the several former VC10 and Super VC10 airliners were likewise converted. The one at Cosford was the longest serving VC10 in the RAF, being the first VC10 delivered (as a C1) in 1966 and the last to leave RAF service in 2013 (as a C1K, being converted in 1995-97).
