English: Victoria Embankment Gardens (Whitehall Extension) The statue on the right is of Major General Charles G Gordon, a talented engineer killed by insurgents at Khartoum in 1885 whilst engaged in a British attempt to stabilise the region -- a story which has some all too obvious modern parallels.
