English: The Canning Jewel, Western Europe, probably 1800-1860. Renaissance style pendant featuring a merman. Enemelled gold, baroque and blister pearls, Diamonds and rubies ( the two largest and the ones on the pendant from India ). Owned by Charles John, 2nd Viscount of Canning, governor-general of India between 1856 and 1862. Victoria and Albert Museum, no. M. 2697-1931. ( Rooms 91-92. Photographs in these rooms are now allowed.)
