הרפובליקה המרוממת של סן מרינו (באיטלקית: Serenissima Repubblica di San Marino) שוכנת בהרי האפנינים והיא אחת מהמדינות הקטנות בעולם (מיד אחרי קריית הוותיקן, מונקו והאיים נאורו וטובלו). סן מרינו, השוכנת כולה בתוך גבולות איטליה, היא אחת מבין 45 מדינות בעולם להן אין גישה לים. היא אחת מבין שש "מיקרו מדינות" באירופה ובעלת האוכלוסייה הקטנה ביותר מבין חברות מועצת אירופה.

סן מרינו טוענת שהיא הרפובליקה העתיקה ביותר בעולם. היא הוקמה ב-3 בספטמבר 301 לספירה על ידי מרינוס הקדוש, סתת אבן נוצרי, מראב (כיום אי בקרואטיה) שנס מהקיסר הרומי דיוקלטיאנוס על רקע רדיפה דתית. חוקת המדינה היא החוקה הכתובה העתיקה ביותר בעולם שעדיין יש לה תוקף, וקיימת משנת 1600. סן מרינו היא הישות המדינית היחידה אשר המשפט הרומי (האזרחי) עדיין תקף בה, לעומת שאר מדינות אירופה בהן הוא חל בעבר אך תוקפו פג בעקבות חקיקת מערכות חוקים (קודקסים)
