| Description |
English: View of North Bar Without, Beverley, East Riding of Yorkshire, England. This view of Beverley's North Bar is taken from "without" at the staggered crossroads, with the A1035 road on the right (which after passing Beverley Westwood and the racecourse eventually joins the A1079 York road), Wylie's Road on the left and the A164 road from Driffield passing through the gateway into the town. Originally, in the Middle Ages, there were four stone bars or gates guarding and controlling the main road entries into the town and North Bar is the only one of them to have survived. The present bar was rebuilt in 1409 from bricks made in Beverley. As the town grew a suburb developed outside the bar and became known as North Bar Without, while the buildings on the inside of the gate belonged to North Bar Within. |
