Description
English: Like other landscape paintings by Briullov in water colour, the view is devoid of people. It keeps an epic feeling though its dimensions are not relatively big. The landscape employs a reddish-brown colour range which is characteristic of the artist’s late works. The artist’s temperament is seen in the expressive and dynamic brush strokes. Briullov uses the effect of double illuminations so beloved by the Romantics, juxtaposing the rose of sky at twilight with storm clouds.

Karl Pawlowitsch Brjullow (São Petersburgo, 12 dez. 1799; Manziana, 23 jul. 1852). Tendo estudado em Roma, em 1835, regressou à Rússia onde foi professor da Academia Imperial das Artes. Atacado por tuberculose, foi aconselhado a passar algum tempo na Madeira, para onde partiu em 1849, saindo no ano seguinte para Roma, mas onde veio a falecer em 1852. A memória do pintor russo Karl Briullov, foi enaltecida em recentes conferências realizadas no Funchal, com especialistas nacionais/regionais e russos, culminando na inauguração a 20 de setembro de 2013 de um busto deste pintor, no jardim municipal da cidade do Funchal, a perpetuar a sua passagem pela Madeira, onde executou vários trabalhos.
