Description
English: Internment Camp of about 200 Austrian and one German Prisoners of War. Near Castle Mountain, Alberta, in Rocky Mountains Park, July 27, 1915. They were said to have the same provisions as the soldiers. Smith ate the soldier's food and found it excellent. The prisoners cooked this food so could not complain about Canadian cooking. The air and water were such as tourists travel thousands of miles to enjoy. The work they did was chiefly cutting small trees and burning bush, such work as even a soft man could do. They were apparently all men used to hard work and probably most of them had come from railroad constructions. About 80% of the prisoners appeared [?]. The soldiers treated the prisoners so well as to appear to be almost servants to the prisoners. Smith noticed guard taking ten prisoners to work, walking by the side of the front two with 6 following, each with axes where they could hit him on the head instead of all ten prisoners ten or fifteen feet in front of guard where he could see them all before they could reach him. Guards were often in plain sight in out road and prisoners back in bush where hard to see, instead of guard back in bush where not easily seen by prisoners, keeping prisoners where he could see them. The officers were correcting these customs of civilians only sworn in as soldiers a few days before.
