Summary
editDescriptionView of old Holloway near Moneybury Hill, Ashridge - geograph.org.uk - 1190071.jpg |
English: View of old Holloway near Moneybury Hill, Ashridge Holloways are ancient tracks which have worn a grove in the landscape. They are common on the edge of the Chiltern escarpment . Their origins date from the days of foot travel and pack horse, and they were also used for herding cattle and sheep between grazing on the level hilltop and the better lower pastures. The V section would make them difficult for later wheeled transport, especially if two wheeled wagons met and tried to pass! Some had been upgraded to roads, some remain as bridleways and some, like this one, have been abandoned.
This picture is taken from the bridge on the track from Ivinghoe Beacon to the Bridgewater Monument. |
