English: Viewpoint, Loughcrew. Taken from the small car park where the Oldcastle to Kells road crosses the Loughcrew ridge. Here is a memorial to Saint Oliver Plunkett of Loughcrew, Oldcastle. He was found guilty of high treason "for promoting the Catholic faith" and was condemned to be hung drawn and quartered. He was the last Catholic to die [1681] for his faith at Tyburn, and the first of the Irish martyrs to be beatified. See http://www.catholic-forum.com/saints/sainto13.htm |
