Vimeiro – Memorial to the Battle of Vimeiro – 1808 - 1908

Description
English: Monument (Padrão) inaugurated by King Manuel II on 21 August 1908 to commemorate the first centenary of the Battle of Vimeiro having put an end to the first napoléonic invasion of Portugal (Nov.1807-Aug.1808).

The plaque at the foot of the column (Obelisco) reads :
"A expedição Britannica sob o commando do / general Wellesley, tendo desembarcado em / Lavos e reunido a si tropas Portuguezas / marchou sobre Lisboa bateu as avançadas inimigas / na Roliça e sendo atacada pelo exército / do comando de Junot nestes sítios do Vimeiro / alcançou sobre elle uma gloriosa vitoria".

As of 2000, six large panels of azulejos have been installed around the Padrão, to illustrate the first steps of the Liberation of Portugal :
