Description

Keramik, 2./3. Jh. n. Chr.

2) Gesichtsgefäß aus einem spätantiken Grab in Schwechat. 4. Jh. n. Chr.
English: Face-pots were widespread in this region as well as in other Roman provinces for a long period of time. The majority of such vessels was found in civilian settlements. They were ordinary objects that were not used for cooking or storage. As the presentation of a face on vessels was always attributed with warding off evil, it can be assumed that they were used in household rituals. These were also used as burial objects from time to time.

1) Face-pot from the area of the urban settlement near the military camp. Ceramic, 2nd-3rd century AD.

2) Face-pot from a late roman grave at Schwechat. Ceramic, glazed, 4th century.
