Одна из самых древних копий чудотворной иконы «Владимирской Богоматери» XII века, сделанная в размер оригинала.

Памятник был приписан Андрею Рублеву В. И. Антоновой с датировкой — около 1395 года. В. Г. Брюсова [1998] также считает ее ранней работой Рублева, но датирует 1380-ми годами. Но, поскольку по мнению большинства специалистов качество исполнения иконы не особенно высоко, преобладает точка зрения, что Рублев непричастен к ее созданию, а сам памятник обычно датируется началом или первой четвертью XV века (см., например, [Лазарев 2000а]).

В начале XVII века находилась у амвона против царских врат, позднее в алтаре в боковом иконостасе Петропавловского придела.

Время поступления в Успенский собор остается неизвестным. Впервые упоминается в описи начала XVII века. Сохранность хорошая. Золотой фон утрачен, посередине идет трещина, заправленная новым левкасом. До 1904 года находилась под золотым окладом. В этой вольной копии с византийской иконы Владимирской Богоматери довольно сильно изменены пропорции головы и лица. с. 368
