Description

Volcaniclastic sandstone in the Precambrian of Minnesota, USA.

The Lake Vermilion Formation is a Precambrian stratigraphic unit in northeastern Minnesota. It consists of low-grade metamorphosed volcaniclastic sedimentary rocks that were deposited in a marine environment.

The outcrop shown above consists of volcaniclastic sandstone. The sediment grains are volcanic in origin, formed during explosive eruptions in the Late Archean and deposited in an oceanic setting. The sand-sized grains are composed of quartz, plagioclase feldspar, and dacite rock fragments (Ojakangas & Matsch, 1982).

Stratigraphy: Lake Vermilion Formation, Neoarchean, 2.695-2.722 Ga
