Nederlands: Zijde wordt verkregen door de rupsen van enkele nachtvlindersoorten gesponnnen cocons.
Teelt van de zijderups is slechts mogelijk in een subtropisch klimaat waar de moerbeiboom groeit. De rupsen leven van de bladeren van deze boom. Reeds 3000 jaar v. Chr. was zijde als grondstof in China bekend en legde men er zich toe op de zijdeteelt. Eerst na 200 n. Chr. werd de cultus buiten China bekend, in ongeveer de 6e eeuw in Europa. |
