An annotated photograph of the Khải Định Emperor explaining what he is wearing.

Summary edit

Description
English: An annotated photograph of the Khải Định Emperor explaining what he is wearing.

1. HAT (NÓN NGỰA): The Khải Định Emperor's hat is covered with feathers, silk wrap, and golden spire. The cone surface is decorated with yellow floral strengths and gemstones around the cone.

2. SHOULDER DECORATIONS (NGÙ VAI): In Western culture, this is an object which is attached to the shoulder that accompanies the uniform to divide the rank. In France since the 18th century, shoulder decorations have been used as a feature to refer to military rank, the rank of an officer can be determined by whether he wears his shoulders on the left, right, or both sides. This is also the origin of the brick shoulder card used in military uniforms today. Usually a shoulder decoration will be made of gold or silver for officers and in colorful fabric for newcomers. The Khải Định Emperor wears a gold oval with carvings in this photograph, a surface emblasoned with gold jewelry and a gemstone trim.

3. JADE BELT (ĐAI NGỌC): Just like with previous Emperors wearing military uniforms with belts with jewels encrusted into them, the belt of the Khải Định Emperor is also decorated with jewelry, his belt is made bigger than earlier belts and has gemstones attached to it.

4. SHOULDER STRAP / SASH (DÂY QUÀNG VAI): The sash has gold (in yellow) covering the outside. This sash symbolised the highest status among the Vietnamese people for a long time. The Emperor himself wore a five-fingered Chinese dragon on the left side of his chest along with a shoulder-length strap with a four-tiered Chinese dragon.

5. LEATHER BOOTS (ỦNG DA): The Emperor's leather boots were worn to a high length and were used to put his white trousers inside the boots. The surface of the boots is shiny, and decorated with silver Chinese dragon shapes.
