Description

A "Península do Capelo", onde se situa o Vulcão dos Capelinhos, formou-se à custa de derrames de lava provenientes de um alinhamento de vulcões, dispostos ao longo de uma fratura de orientação WNW-ESSE.

O último dos vulcões do alinhamento é o Vulcão dos Capelinhos, que esteve em atividade entre 1957 e 58. Teve início no mar, junto aos Ilhéus dos Capelinhos, dando origem a violentas explosões. Os materiais expelidos acumularam-se junto da chaminé, formando uma ilhota que se ligou à Ilha do Faial. A partir de então perdeu as suas características submarinas.

O farol e algumas casas destruídas pela erupção acentuam o caráter dramático de uma paisagem verdadeiramente única nos Açores.

No Vulcão dos Capelinhos, nidifica regularmente o Garajau-comum. As correntes de lava nas zonas mais húmidas estão a ser colonizadas por líquenes e algumas espécies de vegetação costeira.
