Contemporary Biographies, by W.T. Pike, including "London at the opening of the Twentieth Century". (Pike's New Century Series no.15). Published in 1905 by W.T. Pike & Co., 19 Grand Parade, Brighton. The volumes in this series each contain an illustrated section about the county, followed by a list of short biographies (each with a photographic portrait) of men of the county who were alive at the time of publication (plus a few who had recently died). Each volume has an index to the illustrations of buildings and views of the county, and an index to the biographies. The London volume was available to subscribers as sections of the whole: this section covers bureaucrats: actuaries and insurance, accountants, and secretaries. Showing a photograph titled: Metropolitan Bank of England and Wales, Southall. Architect C.G. Miller. The building was opened at 25 Denmark Terrace, The Green, Southall, on Tuesday 16 January 1900. (Source: "Southall", Middlesex & Surrey Express, 6 January 1900, page 6 col.3). This building is still standing; it was an HSBC bank until around 2015–16. |
