The main theme of the Gelede masquerade is the power of women, "the mothers" or "owners of the world." Elderly women, female ancestors and female deities are honored. The masquerade also serves to entertain and allow artistic expression in dance, music, dress and wooden masks. Finally, masqueraders provide public criticism of improper behavior.

This mask includes a prominent crescent moon above the forehead, which may refer to the supernatural powers of kings to uncover plots and disorder within their realms. The upper part of the mask includes a female headwrap, penises and sheathed knives. The knives may refer to Ogun, the god of iron.
