Description

Adam and Eve
Solnhofen stone
By Loy Hering (about 1485-1555)
South German (Franconia, Eichstatt), about 1520-30
Museum no. 427-1869

Small scale sculptures in materials such as Solnhofen stone or boxwood were increasingly in demand from patrons in centres such as Augsburg and Nuremberg. Although this example was probably made in Eichstatt, Hering was trained in Augsburg and both his small reliefs and his limestone epitaph reliefs represent types of sculpture increasingly being demanded by burgher and merchant patrons in South German cities during the early 16th century.
