Português: Iniciou a sua aprendizagem artística com o pintor António José da Costa, antes de se matricular na Academia Portuense de Belas-Artes, escola que frequentou entre 1864 e 1873: foram seus mestres, entre outros, Tadeu de Almeida Furtado e João António Correia.
Em 1873 concorreu à bolsa do Estado para pensionista no estrangeiro na classe de Pintura de História, a par de Silva Porto que se candidatou na categoria de Paisagem. Em Paris matriculou-se na Escola Nacional de Belas Artes onde teve como professores Cabanel e Yvon. Nesta cidade teve a oportunidade de contactar com novas tendências estéticas, nomeadamente com os artistas com ligações à escola de Barbizon. Em 1876, após uma visita de estudo à Bélgica, Holanda e Inglaterra, partiu para Itália onde iria permanecer até meados de 1878, ano em que retorna a Paris. Regressado definitivamente a Portugal, em 1879, foi nomeado Académico da Academia Portuense; em 1881 substituiu Tadeu Furtado na cadeira de Desenho Histórico e em 1895 foi transferido para a de Pintura Histórica, em substituição de João António Correia. A sua actividade docente, que se prolongou até 1926, foi marcante pela iniciação dos alunos à nova estética do naturalismo. Promovia sessões de trabalho no exterior estimulando o exercício da pintura no contacto directo com a natureza, insistindo na qualidade do desenho como base de execução de qualquer obra. Paralelamente à actividade de professor, um pouco à semelhança do que acontecia em Lisboa, em torno do Grupo do Leão, em cuja génese se envolveu Silva Porto, Marques de Oliveira participou activamente nos movimentos de renovação artística, no Porto: ainda em 1880 participou na fundação do Centro Artístico Portuense e do seu órgão A Arte Portuguesa e, mais tarde, na organização das Exposições de’Arte que se realizaram no Ateneu Comercial do Porto. No conjunto da vasta obra de pintura que realizou e que se encontra dispersa por instituições públicas e privadas e colecções particulares, assumem particular significado as que dedicou aos grandes temas da Paisagem e do Retrato. A sua actividade ficou ainda marcada pela pintura decorativa e religiosa, feita a partir de encomenda, e ainda à ilustração de livros e revista. Ao longo de toda a sua carreira, Marques de Oliveira participou em numerosas exposições nacionais e internacionais. Em 1929, dois anos após a morte, foi-lhe prestada homenagem no Porto com a inauguração de um monumento em sua honra, no Jardim de S. Lázaro, e uma grande exposição da sua obra, realizada no Ateneu Comercial do Porto. |
