But this isn't just unknown territory for the residents of Torquay, whose nearest branches were previously at Saltash, Okehampton and Sidmouth. Plainmoor, an area of terraces around Torquay United's football ground, is a surprising location for a chain associated with well-heeled areas of the home counties. However, this is a modest-sized store, and only needs to cream off a small proportion of the local food retail market.

Suited senior staff were present in large numbers, just failing to outnumber shoppers. One manager, keen to hone the skills of a more junior staff member, waves at an endcap: "What's wrong here?" Lad points hopefully at a random product. "No", replies manager, straightening a marginally crooked special offer label with a casual flick born of years of experience.

One customer was on his mobile: "you should get down here ... the layout's wonderful ... I think you'll be impressed." Meanwhile the car park can't cope, although gridlock in the area seems to be avoided.
