Summary
editDescriptionWaiuta MRD 02.jpg |
English: Remains of bakery ovens in the ghost town of Waiuta, site of the Blackwater and Prohibition gold mines, on the West Coast of New Zealand near Reefton. Settled after gold was discovered in in quartz reefs in 1905, its population peaked at over 600 people in the 1930s. The mine closed abruptly after a shaft collapsed in 1951, and the town was soon after abandoned. Today the remaining few buildings have been restored as historic tourist attractions. |
